Experience the historical mining areas of Northern WI and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan during this fascinating airplane tour with sight seeing expert and pilot Bill Lauer! Learn the history of mining through a birds-eye view of how the mining companies and their corresponding communities developed!
The tour begins in the Mellen, WI area and will proceed east to Bessemer, MI. Known as the Penokee Mountain Range, mining started in this area in the late 1880’s and continued through the early 1960’s. Although no longer active, you will see remnants of the old mines, the vast areas they covered and the surrounding boomtowns that developed. View the overgrowth of trees and underbrush as nature astonishingly renews itself on the tailings of mining byproduct.
You will see some of the transportation routes used to move over 400 million tons of iron ore that was shipped from both Iron and Gogebic Counties to the steel mills of Milwaukee and beyond.
We will show you the vast areas of timber that was cut to be used as support beams inside the large underground tunnels where the ore was mined. And if it is a clear day, you will see the Apostle Islands, Lake Superior, area skill hills, Copper Peak and plenty of beautiful wild country!
