Follow the footsteps of Native Americans, French explorers and first settlers as they journeyed through Iron County, WI on the famous Flambeau Trail. On this amazing airplane tour with expert guide and pilot Bill Lauer you will learn how transportation, via this ancient “woodland highway” and later by railroad opened up northern WI to development. See how the Flambeau Trail crossed the Continental Divide linking Lake Superior and Mississippi watersheds allowing fur-trading commerce all the way to the Gulf of Mexico!
From the air you will see where the original Flambeau trail commenced at the mouth of the Montreal River on the south shore of Lake Superior and continued overland south to the Continental Divide at Long Lake. See how rivers contained natural barriers as they flowed north at the Divide to Lake Superior making travel by canoe impossible. Imagine how travelers portaged 45 miles with bags of goods in tow! Once at Long Lake canoes were used for the remainder of the route as rivers flow south to Lac du Flambeau and beyond!
